When I’m not building staked furniture (chairs and stools) I’m always thinking of the next storage piece to make for my home. Like my chairs, the chests and cupboards I build are made mostly with basic hand tools and domestic woods. The furniture pieces are made to be useful, durable, and age beautifully. Between deciding on the furniture form, and opting for a paint color or wood as the finish, there are endless design options.

I prefer working with pine to make larger furniture for storage. Pine keeps the piece lightweight and is more affordable for the amount of wood required. One of the first cabinets I designed was a pine blanket chest with drawer to serve as a liquor cabinet for cocktails (featured below). The inside dimensions were made to fit the collection on hand, while keeping in mind how the chest proportions looked from the outside. The construction uses rabbets, glue, and nails, joinery traditionally found on old chests, to make a strong joint.

I find chests and cupboards to be one of the most useful furniture items to have in a home. They are wonderful in the way that they hold all the items I don’t want on display, while at the same time being a statement piece I will never get tired of seeing.

When I have a chest or cupboard available they will be posted for sale here.
